Colony

Mile Marker:98.8

Colony elevator.

It is 7.8 miles north to Welda. It is 5.6 miles south to Carlyle.
Leaving Welda the trail passes underneath Highway 169 and proceeds to the southwest between the highway and Old Colony Road. There is a slight rise during the 9 miles to Colony that mirrors the same type of climb that was felt during the last miles into Welda from Garnett. As with most of the trail the path is quite straight and you can often see the trail all the way to the horizon. Generally you will see open prairie along this segment with lazy hills on either side of you. As you approach Colony you will see more scrub on either side of the trail. The trail between Colony and Carlyle is one of the steeper grades of the trail. If you are heading south you will find yourself keeping up a pretty good clip as you start to exit Colony. The trail start fairly open for several miles until it passes underneath the highway. At that point you are almost immediately enter a wooded area that continues all the way to Carlyle. Once you enter the woods the grade lessens.

I hadn't had a chance to stop in here before and since I hit town at about 11:30, it seemed like a good time to give it a shot.

I was greeted at the door and quickly welcomed into the diner. I stat a a comfortable table and surveyed the menu. I think the only that made sense to have was the quintessential diner food, the burger. There was a salad bar, but after about twenty m...

I have stopped in here several times for hydration and a quick bite. Nice, small town store with limited snacks and drinks. Usually stock Gatoraid (not much, don't expect any if a small group came through town before you), soda, candy and a personal favorite, peanut butter cheese crackers.
